As students from across the country and around the world flooded to campus last week to start off a new semester, we’ve prepared the launch of a new season of UBC Arts On Air.
This week, geography professor Dan Hiebert joins Ira Nadel in studio to discuss the foundation of what makes our country so diverse — immigration.
Immigration has changed the make up of not only students in university classrooms but also communities within Vancouver. Newcomers benefit the country in many ways but the process of bringing new immigrants into Canada is not without its challenges. Violent radicalization that can occur among a very small percentage of people is a concern for public safety and security.
Hiebert — who is also the co-director of the Canadian Network for Research on Terrorism, Security and Society — discusses how government tackles the issue of security threats without violating the privacy of the general public or marginalizing immigrant communities.
